At Busy Bees Pre-School we want to ensure our children are heard and that their world is protected. As apart of our curriculum our three core focuses supports the governments strategy.

A variety of topics are covered within the focuses like caring for plants, bird migration, recycling (paper, plastic and metals), weather, seasons, bugs, insects, animals and marine life.

When talking about our world as a setting we feel it is important to ensure children are listened to as an individual, they are supported in expressing their views, that their views are taken into account, they are involved in decision-making processes and that they share power and responsibility for decision-making.

In April 2022, the Government launched their strategy (DfE, 2022) on sustainability for education and children’s services systems. Within it there are several key messages that relate to learning and play in early childhood and care sector, which are:

• Nature

• The causes and impacts of climate change

• The importance of sustainability.

We all have a responsibility to sustainability – an appreciation of our relationship with the environment, a respect of the world around us and the greater order of nature.

Early childhood is a crucial period in developing fundamental values and attitudes that children will potentially take into adulthood as lifelong learners. Historically, early childhood is positioned as an advocate for sustainability, with pioneering giants championing social justice, equality and children’s voices.

By engaging young children in experiential climate change learning opportunities, promoting questioning and critical thinking, they will be actively participating in sustainability and climate change practice. As the world is changing, it is only right that we encourage children to begin their climate education, learn more about sustainability and start developing their green skills to support with their future.
